These boards aren’t strictly 70’s-style single fins, but that description captures the essence of their design.
I was first introduced to these boards by Shyama, who had made a couple for himself and asked me to ride them for feedback. Later, Shyama’s father, Simon, described these boards as “surfing with economy” after watching Shyama surf them.
I was deeply intrigued by the boards and the powerful sensations they provided, which led me to create my own versions.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend these boards to intermediate or advanced surfers unless they have a genuine interest in riding this style of board and are willing to invest the time to master them. You won’t find yourself ripping or having fun on these boards with the wrong mindset, as they expose every fundamental flaw in your technique and bad habits formed by the forgiving nature of modern shortboards.
These boards are best suited for good waves, particularly long, down-the-line waves like Winkipop and Bells. They cater to surfers who want a lot of control from their board and a strong central drive from the middle fin. To work properly, they need to be ridden with extra volume, which is one of their key attractions. This added volume provides excellent paddling performance, though they can be challenging for surfers accustomed to traditional shortboard dimensions.
Personally, I find myself riding these most often as a shortboard replacement in 3-6 ft surf. They’re ideal when I want a board that paddles exceptionally well or when the waves are pumping, but I’m not in the mood for top-to-bottom surfing. Instead, I enjoy their sheer speed and the ability to carve long, arcing lines.
I’ve decided to offer these boards despite their niche appeal compared to other designs. They serve their purpose exceptionally well, and I feel a deep connection to them. They align perfectly with my surfing style, making them a design I’m proud to share.
