Step-ups have probably been the most consistent boards in my quiver over the last 10 years. It’s something I hadn’t realized until recently, but they’re likely the boards I’ve spent the longest time refining.

These boards are more stripped back in their design, as I’m not exploring feel but focusing purely on function. They’re typically ridden when the waves are exceptional.

I build two types, both sharing almost identical design features except for the foil:

Traditional Shortboard Foil
This version is ideal for surfers who want a board slightly longer than their shortboard while still maintaining a “performance” approach. I often recommend these to surfers who are less inclined to ride longer boards and may be venturing into longer, high-performance wave equipment for the first time.

Fuller Foil with a Small Beak
This version has a slightly thicker nose due to a small beak, offering more paddling assistance. It’s the version I personally ride, as I primarily use these boards when I need maximum help catching waves. I usually suggest this option to surfers who are comfortable with longer equipment and looking to ride more challenging, engaging waves.

The fuller foil option excels on the open face and suits certain surfing styles well, as it provides a bit more pushback and drive from the board.
